Field Studies and Evaluations

MCS has conducted several private assessment and evaluation efforts for clients.  These efforts are tailored specifically to the client’s needs and often are conducted in the field under active operations.

The following are examples of such efforts:

  • Crew leadership team evaluations
  • Training effectiveness evaluations and data collection
  • Review of standard operating procedures
  • Development of baseline surveys for future program evaluation
  • Organizational culture surveys

In addition, MCS has authored three publicly-released reports offering significant insight for emergency responders and incident management teams.

In May 2007, MCS published BDF Engine 57 Support Mission: Lessons Learned from CIIMT-1 and the San Bernardino National Forest (PDF). The report attempts to place the events and decisions of those involved with the BDF Engine 57 Support Mission into a context from which others can derive value from the experience. It provides illustrations of principles-based leadership and incident management in a culture that is shifting from being rules-based to one that is principles-based.

In the fall of 2004, MCS was part of a team that captured initial impressions of the involvement of wildland firefighting resources in the response to Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Ivan. MCS analyzed the organizational issues stemming from the incident and compiled the findings in this report: 2004 Hurricane Response: Initial Impressions Report (IIR) from Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Ivan (PDF), which was published by the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center in December 2004.

In November 2003, MCS participated in a team that captured lessons learned in the Southern California wildfires. MCS subsequently summarized and compiled the findings in Southern California Firestorm 2003: Report for the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center (PDF), which was published by the Wildland Fire Lessons Learned Center in December 2003.
